All competitors and spectators for tonight’s ping pong tournament, take note! The 2013 MADC & SceneOn ‘Balls of Fire’ rules are not the same as those of traditional table tennis.

As such, we ask that you read the following rules so as to understand how the tournament will operate.

RULES:

All rules have been decided upon in the interest of having fun and using the time we have most efficiently for the number of people who want to play. These are meant to be casual events, not the Australian Open.

Singles

- The centre line serves no purpose, ignore it.

- For each game, the first player to reach 15 points wins. However, each game must be won by at least a two-point margin.

- A point is scored after each ball is put into play, not just when the server wins the point.

- The edges of the table are part of the legal table surface. If the ball hits the table, it’s counted as in.

- Serving is determined by who wins each point. If you win the point, it’s your serve. If you lose the point, your opponent serves.

- If the ball hits the net during a serve, the person who serves gets one more chance. If the ball hits the net a second time, or does not make it over the net, the server forfeits a point and it is their opponent’s turn to serve.

- At the end of each game, players are required to shake hands and maintain a sportsman-like attitude, whether they win or lose.

Doubles

- The centre line will be used to define who receives and who returns.

- The server shall make first hit, receiver diagonal to server shall make a return, partner of the server must make the next service, with the partner of the receiver then making a return. The play shall continue in that sequence until a point is made.

- Only before your team serves are you allowed to change places with your partner.

- For each game, the first player to reach 15 wins.

- You must alternate serving with your partner.

Both championship games will be first to 21, not 15, points.

The MADC held the 2012 AGM on Wednesday night and tallied up the votes for the 2013 Committee members.

The new members are:

Tony Prysten

Creative Director and Co-Founder, igloo

Tony Prysten

Originally studying at Monash University as an industrial designer, Tony has evolved from a print and brand based graphic designer into a digital designer and creative director. This combination gives his work its distinctive style.

Tony was a keynote speaker at the 2009 AgIdeas conference in Melbourne, alongside some of the world’s leading creative talent. His work is backed by an array of industry awards including MADC and AGDA.

Sally Brownbill

Founder, The Brownbill Effect

Sally Brownbill

Sally Brownbill has had a successful career as a commercial photographer and agent. To Melbourne-based creatives, her name will seem familiar from her days at Dux Creative Consultants.

Sally now devotes her experience and expertise to developing the professional standing of individual photographers both in Australia and overseas. In February 2013, she is launching The Brownbill Effect, an online creative resource that will redefine the way creative professionals connect with each other.

Sally is a big believer in helping the next generation and is a lecturer in the Bachelor of Arts (Photography) course at RMIT, as well as guest lecturing at NMIT and the prestigious Ultimo TAFE in NSW. She has previously been on the MADC Committee and has been a judge at numerous industry award shows.

Natasha Wood

Senior Copywriter, McCann

Natasha Wood

When asked why she wanted to join the Committee, Natasha charmed voters with this response:

“This year I picked up Best of Show. That’s never happened to me before. It kind of blew me away. I felt like a ten year old winning my first running race with my parents on hand to take pictures and revel in my greatness. Well, that may be an overstatement (the greatness bit), but I was truly humbled and delighted.

That feeling hasn’t gone. Some people like to act cool at MADC. They swan up on stage, collect yet another award and trot off. I danced like Madge (before she got saggy) because I truly believe they are special. To me MADC matters. I’d like to be a part of that.”

John Akritidis

Creative Director, Marmalade

John Akritidis

John started his creative life sorting out mail, sending parcels and copping an earful about empty fridges in the hallowed halls of Clemenger Melbourne. Now Creative Directing at Marmalade Melbourne (after five glorious years at DDB Melbourne), John is ready to give something back.

“Melbourne has been good to me. Born and bred here, I know it well and have seen it grow and prosper. The Melbourne advertising industry has also been good to me, so now, I want to be good to it,” he said.

They will join the continuing Committee members:

Nigel Dawson (President), Creative Director, Grey

Tracy Proposch (Vice President), Pro-Duce

Paul Baxter, Senior Designer, Risk Sound

Nick Condon, Managing Director, DDB

Simon Bagnasco, Creative Director, DDB

Andrew Woodhead, Creative Group Head, Leo Burnett

Helene Nicol, Producer, Mr Smith

Damian Kelly, Designer, Damian Kelly Design

Nick McDonald, A3 Recruitment

Ant Simmons will be retiring from the Committee in 2013 – we are all very grateful for his generous nature and his contribution to the Club. We’ll miss you, Ant!

Nominations are now open for the 2013 MADC Committee.

We are looking for enthusiastic creative people to join next year’s Committee – the proviso being that you come willing and able to commit time and ideas to the Club.

“This is the Club for all creative people in Melbourne. As well as the MADC Awards, we run educational programmes, social events and host guest speakers,” said MADC President Nigel Dawson.

“It’s a great way to build the strength of our business, and a great opportunity to get involved and help mentor the next generation of creative people for our industry,” he added.

To nominate yourself, or someone else for the committee, please email info@madc.com.au with your name, title, agency or studio and two lines on why you would be a good addition to the Committee.

Established in 1955, the MADC is Australia’s oldest advertising club. The Club has members from across all facets of the creative and advertising community and hosts Australia’s largest creative awards night with up to 800 people attending.

The Club also has a commitment to encourage new blood into the industry. Each year we run MADC Ignition, a mentor scheme for advertising and graphic design students from the key universities around Melbourne. The scheme develops young creative talent by giving students exposure to Melbourne advertising agencies and access to senior creative people.

In conjunction with our major sponsor, The Age, the Club runs Creative RAW, a live competition to promote the development of creative talent with fewer than three years’ experience in the advertising and design industry.

Freelance junior team Tuvia Bloom and Stephanie Barr won this year’s MADC Creative Raw competition, hosted at The Age on Friday.

The judging panel, headed by Grant Rutherford, awarded the pair first place, narrowly ahead of Kate Pattison and Tom Nijam, with Connor Byrt and Jess Gunn third.

The mystery client was JB Hi-Fi NOW, a music subscription service that allows members to stream unlimited music via their computer, mobile phone or tablet device.

The competition challenges junior teams with fewer than three years’ experience working in the industry to respond to the brief in just seven hours. They have one minute to present their idea, which must be primarily focused on using The Age newspaper. This year’s competition was heavily over-subscribed, with the places for 21 teams gone within minutes of the call for entries.

The winning work is then published in The Age, and, for the first time, has the potential to be carried across Fairfax’s digital assets. Co-sponsor Visual Jazz Isobar has offered to help with any digital production necessary.

“We were really pleased at the interest and popularity of this year’s Creative Raw challenge,” Fairfax Media’s Chief Operating Officer for Metro News, David Hoath said.

The challenge is the brainchild of Hoath, who has seen it go from strength to strength over the past seven years.

“We’ve had gourmet cheeses and cars and tea as previous clients,” he said. “Having JB Hi-Fi this year is a great one to inspire this young group – it’s the sort of product that’s right up their alley.”

MADC committee member Nick Condon from DDB thanked the Melbourne creative community who supported the event, including Rutherford and mentors for the day: Fergus Donaldson from Ogilvy, Richard Muntz from JWT, Natasha Wood and Matt Stoddard from McCann, and Paul Hastings.

The work will be produced and published in line with the client’s marketing strategy.
